How To Become A Writer

Our first reading in Sweeney's class for 102 this semester was called "How To Become A Writer". Everyone in class came to the unanimous decision that the experts were a bit confusing, though interesting to read. Our discussion led to many conclusions that I had not thought of while I was reading. For instance, that there is in fact no precise way to "become a writer". Most people at some point in their lives write at least SOMETHING, whether it be in school or for leisure. The character Francie was always told continuously that she never had a particular plot for the stories she wrote; Therefore, she interpreted this criticism by thinking that her writings were "wrong". But were they really, "wrong"? There are no set guidelines (Unless in education I suppose) that inhibit any kind of creativity in writing. I believe that anyone can be a so called "writer" even if some of the readers do not understand the message. In confusing writings such as these, there may be various hidden messages. Perhaps the reader must analyze a bit more, or discuss the writing with others. This reading could mean many things, but I believe that the main purpose was to encourage creativity and imagination. Everything can't be perfect, you know.
